"For ten years, we’ve partnered with schools, restaurants, and communities throughout NYC to build a better future for the city and its waterways. It’s inspiring to see New Yorkers unite at the water’s edge, offering their talents and passions to pursue a clean, abundant, and accessible New York Harbor. Together, we can protect this incredible natural resource in the greatest city in the world."

About Billion Oyster Project

Billion Oyster Project is harnessing the power of public education to restore oyster reefs to New York Harbor—vital ecosystems that improve water quality, provide habitat for marine life, and strengthen natural barriers against climate impacts. Founded on the belief that restoration without education is temporary, and recognizing that learning outcomes improve when students engage in real restoration projects, Billion Oyster Project collaborates with public schools. The team designs STEM curricula for NYC schools focused on oyster restoration, engages students in large-scale projects, collects discarded oyster shells from nearly 70 restaurants, and involves the local community. It has introduced 122 million oysters across 19 acres with the help of over 20,000 students and nearly 15,000 volunteers.

Rivian Foundation's grant

Rivian Foundation's support is helping the Billion Oyster Project to accelerate its ambitious plan to reintroduce 179 million oysters to New York Harbor over the next two years. This funding will also help enable BOP to expand its educational outreach, with plans to engage 9,000 students annually by 2025, with a special focus on Title I schools. Additionally, BOP plans to grow its community initiatives to reach 16,000 community members each year by 2025, fostering widespread participation in this vital environmental restoration effort.
