“In the Pacific Northwest, multiple tribes share unique identities and long histories of stewarding traditional ecosystem gardens and animals we consider relatives. The Coast Salish Youth Coalition reconnects these human and non-human relations to protect the environments that have sustained us for thousands of generations. We are proud to do this work.”

About Coast Salish Youth Coalition

The Coast Salish Youth Coalition is an Indigenous-led nonprofit dedicated to empowering native youth through cultural revitalization, intergenerational mentorship, and land-based environmental learning. Working across the ancestral homelands of Coast Salish peoples in Western Washington State, CSYC blends traditional ecological knowledge with youth leadership programs such as canoe journeys, camas harvesting, stewardship camps, and youth-led cultural programs. As a newly independent nonprofit emerging from fiscal sponsorship, CSYC is continuing to build momentum as a trusted hub for intertribal youth engagement while laying the groundwork for long-term land stewardship through Indigenous frameworks like Cultural Conservation Easements.

Rivian Foundation's grant

Rivian Foundation’s support is helping the Coast Salish Youth Coalition to deliver intergenerational programs that reconnect youth with land, language, and identity—promoting the growth of native foods within special ecosystems through activities like seagrass restoration, camas prairie tending, and fire stewardship. The grant will also enable CSYC to expand a mentorship model pairing tribal youth with elders and cultural educators to foster leadership, intergenerational knowledge-sharing, and deeper ties to Coast Salish cultural practices.
