"California’s ambitious climate, conservation, and equity goals include powering the state with 100 percent renewable energy by 2045, protecting 30 percent of lands and coastal waters by 2030 (“30x30”), and prioritizing Tribal leadership and co-management. RLF believes that all three of these objectives are achievable with smart planning and collaboration."

About RLF's Public Lands and Sustainable Energy Program

The Public Lands and Sustainable Energy Program (PLSE) of Resources Legacy Fund is working to ensure California can meet its ambitious clean energy goals while protecting biodiversity and cultural resources, respecting Tribal sovereignty, and ensuring early and robust engagement of Tribal communities related to clean energy siting. Recognizing that large-scale solar, wind, and transmission projects often intersect with ecologically and culturally significant lands, the program brings together important players —including Tribal Nations, conservation organizations, developers, and agencies—to co-create collaborative, place-based solutions. By combining policy expertise with relationship-driven strategies grounded in respect for ecological integrity and cultural resources, the program turns potential conflict into opportunity, fostering early agreements that advance conservation, clean energy, and community well-being.

Rivian Foundation's grant

Rivian Foundation’s support is helping the RLF PLSE program to scale its proven approach for balancing renewable energy buildout with conservation and cultural priorities in some of California’s most high-stakes landscapes. The grant will enable RLF to expand place-based collaborations and provide technical support to Tribal partners. The work aims to build common ground for positive engagement amongst Tribes, developers, and conservationists, applying lessons from successes that reduce conflict and accelerate California's progress toward climate, biodiversity, and community goals.
