“Climate policies, environmental laws, and restoration practices have been built on a radically incomplete understanding of the natural world — one that has largely overlooked fungi. By mapping the biodiversity of Earth’s mycorrhizal fungi, we can change this trajectory.”

About Society for the Protection of Underground Networks

The Society for the Protection of Underground Networks (SPUN) is a pioneering nonprofit dedicated to safeguarding the planet's mycorrhizal fungal networks, which play a crucial role in climate regulation and biodiversity. Mycorrhizal fungi, which form extensive underground networks, draw down approximately 13 billion tons of CO2 annually—about one-third of global fossil fuel emissions. Despite their critical importance, many underground ecosystems in the U.S. remain under-sampled, particularly in remote areas. SPUN is addressing this gap by exploring, documenting, and protecting extreme underground ecosystems, beginning with the Alaskan Tundra and the drought-resistant deserts of the Western United States.

Rivian Foundation's grant

Rivian Foundation's support is helping SPUN conduct large-scale biodiversity surveys and taxonomic assessments of fungi in the Alaskan Tundra and U.S. deserts. This project will identify key fungal species responsible for maintaining soil carbon stocks and assisting plants in accessing water reserves and nutrients in these critical habitats. By developing high-resolution maps and sharing data with conservation organizations, Rivian Foundation’s support will enable SPUN to inform effective conservation strategies and restoration efforts, ensuring that these vital underground ecosystems are recognized and preserved as part of broader climate and biodiversity solutions.
